Moratalla the Area (Klick on map below)
Moratalla is located in the north-east of the Murcia region, close to Cehegín, Caravaca de la Cruz and within an easy drive to the Airports at St Javier , Alicante and Almeria.

The municipality of Moratalla covers an area of 961km2, making it one of the largest in Spain.
The town itself is situated at the base of The Sierra De Los Alamos, nestled amongst extensive pine forests with stunning views across wheat plains and apricot orchards towards the famous rice growing town of Calasparra.
Mankind have inhabited the area for thousands of years, leaving a legacy of Neolithic cave paintings and some of the oldest human remains in Spain. It’s easy to see why. The rocky mountains cradling the town at their base form a curve heading towards Benizar. Rain caught on their peaks filters through the rocks, emerging as abundant springs in the forests which flow down to the town, irrigating apricot orchards and olive groves. The old Spaniards knew where to build. The mountains keep the bad weather away from the town and although the town is strategically elevated, it is amazingly well protected, missing storms, frost and winds.
The area is famed for its’ natural beauty, attracting walkers, cyclists, horse riders, paragliders and lovers of the outdoors. There are many Casas Rural for hire and a lot of Spanish have holiday properties here. Many beautiful walks, springs, reservoirs and forests are just a few minutes from the town centre, with The stunning Casa De Cristo and the lavender fields of Campo San Juan a short drive away.
The town retains its’ small Spanish town feel, with development being tightly controlled by the Town Hall to avoid the urban sprawls that ruin so many developing areas.
There are 2 lively fiestas a year, the main one being in July when the centre is overrun by bulls and a busy camping site 7kms from the old town offers half price accommodation to non Spanish visitors out of season.
The area has started to attract British residents, mainly drawn in from the coast by the desire to live a more Spanish lifestyle and the outstanding natural beauty of the region.
Moratalla has a new Health Centre, offering 24 hour emergency cover, a library, a theatre, good shops , a weekly market, a language school,65 bars and restaurants, chiropodists, dentists, beauty salon, good schools and a well funded sports centre offering a range of activities.
The nearby towns of Caravaca De La Cruz and Cehegin offer more cosmopolitan shopping, larger supermarkets and more established English communities, where book exchanges, English language publications and social activities are readily available.
Moratallerans are proud of their welcoming town and go out of their way to offer help and information at every opportunity. Crime is virtually non-existent and the area remains free from many of the problems associated with coastal living, offering a viable lifestyle for those seeking a change of lifestyle.
Idealy located with an easy drive of only 1 1/2 hours to any of the three main airports ( Alicante, St Javier, Almeria ). You can be skiing in Granda within 3 hours door to door and in Africa by ferry within 5 hours driving.
